The charts generated by our software have a limited amount of room for the chart image and legend. If the size of the legend for the chart grows too large, due to lengthy descriptors or a very large number of items in the table, the large legend can cause the chart image to be very small or not appear.
Resolution
You may reduce the size of the legend by changing the source data in the relevant table(s) or by changing the legend font. You can also move the legend to a new location (top, side, etc.) relative to the chart. If the data is clear by itself, you can also simple disable the chart legend so it does not show. Click the options below for detailed instructions.
Reduce the size of the Chart Legend
Open the table associated with the chart. (The Instructions above the chart will tell you which tables are linked to it). Change the row labels (column A) to be shorter, or reduce the number of rows by summarizing data in broader categories, as needed.
Fonts
You can also reduce the size of the font which is being used to generate the legend for the chart by taking the following steps:
- Click the Custom Format button from the tool bar at the top of the Chart.
- Right-click on the Legend in the display of the chart
- Click Font to open the font dialog
- Change the font from Arial to Arial Narrow.
- Manually reduce the Font Size from 9 to a smaller number by typing it into the box.
- Click OK to save these changes.
Either of these steps will have the desired effect of decreasing the overall size of the legend allowing for more room to print the chart image.
Move the Chart Legend
Another alternative, if your problem is caused by long row labels or too many rows, is to change the position of the chart label, from side to top or bottom, or vice versa.
- Click the Custom Format button from the tool bar at the top of the Chart.
- Right-click on the Legend in the display of the chart.
- Select Left, Top, Right, or Bottom to move the chart Legend to a new location.
Disabling the Chart Legend in the Chart
You can remove the legend altogether, if you need to.
- Click the Custom Format button from the tool bar at the top of the Chart.
- Click the Legend Box icon (shown below) that displays immediately above the chart name to disable the Legend.
- Type text into the related topic to indicate what data the various chart segments represent.
